Health and Safety

Health and Safety is the main concern when entering any room, but especially into a fashion and textiles room for all the electrical, hot and sharp equipment that is used. I have created a list of possible equipment that i have used and i will intend to use.

Heat gun-
I have/will use this to burn different types of material, along with drying certain paints and dyes such as 3D puff powder paint. Not only will i have to take care plugging the heat gun in, i will also have to make sure that when using the gun it is only aimed at the area it is needed and no burning/melting anything around it. Also make sure if the item that you are burning is small, you use scissors or an object, not your hand to hold it down as it could burn your skin.

Iron-
I have/will use this to iron clothes/garments/material down in almost any project. I need to make sure there is no water around the plug area when plugging it in. depending on if im using the normal iron or the industrial iron i need to make sure that there is nothing on the face of it and it is clean before using. and making sure that when holding material down the iron does not go to close to my fingers. also i have to be careful of the steam coming out of the iron and that can burn and blister skin.

Heatpress-
I have/will use this when transferring imagines or drawings onto fabric. The heatpress gets incredibly hot (200oc) so when pressing it down make sure that no part of my body is going to get pressed down with the fabric and nothing is touching the plates. Also another concern is once the press is released do not take work out straight away as it will still be very hot it will burn your fingers. Making sure fabrics can take the heat that is selected is also key as it can melt them and emit fumes into the small enclosed space. if this does happen, open windows and leave the room immediately
.
Sewing machine/ Overlocker-
I have/will use this almost everyday. make sure the needle is correctly in place, as do not want it snapping which could cause piercing of the skin. make sure it is all set up correctly and hair is tied back and student badge is on the side and not dangling down. keep hands clear of the needle when sewing and when adjusting the boobin make sure the machine is switched off, as if the foot is pressed the needle will come down and could cause injury.

Glue gun-
I have/will use this when needing to glue heavier objects that prit stick cant be used on. when plugging in make sure all the sockets and plug is clear of any water ect. do not touch the end of the gun as will get very hot and be careful to not get hot glue on hands/body as this can cause a burn or blister to the skin. also due to the glue gun not having an on and off button, when finished turn it off at the plug as it could cause a safety risk to someone else if it gets too hot.
